We demand that the residents of the District of Columbia be granted full and equal representation in the United States Congress. It is the height of hypocrisy that those living in our nation’s capital — the symbolic center of democracy around the world — are denied the right to vote and elect their own representatives in Congress.
The District has a population greater than the population of Wyoming and Vermont. Its residents fight in our wars and pay federal taxes. Yet they are treated as second class citizens in our current system of government.
We call upon Congress, elected state officials, and fair minded people of the United States to recognize and correct the injustice inflicted upon residents of the District of Columbia by granting them the same right to participate in our democracy as other Americans. This basic right may be achieved through statehood, representation through a neighboring state or by Constitutional Amendment.
